Health Group Pushes Lower Rates Of Weight Loss, Research
Lower instances of sustained weight-loss, between 5-10 percent of an individual’s weight, could be the key to helping the nation kick the obesity epidemic, says a health coalition.
The Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance is offering the following recommendations to policymakers to improve awareness, outreach and research on the weight disorder:
- Encourage the use of a 5-10 percent sustained weight loss as a key factor when judging the success of a particular diet or program.
- Promote weight-loss programs that offer a variety of lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise, medication and more.
- Expand the understanding that successful weight-loss programs should be multi-faceted and not just focus on the role of personal responsibility.
- Continue to expand the knowledge base on obesity through research.
According to the Alliance, overall body weight was once thought to be the main predictor of certain diseases but that even minor weight loss, if maintained, provided great health benefits.
